Think Tank on Mental Health Court Diversion for Racialized Populations

Join the Racialized Populations and Mental Health & Addictions COI as we get together to discuss the challenges and implications of being a racialized person going through the justice system.

The objectives of the think tank are to:

  • Hear from racialized individuals with mental health and addictions issues who have interacted with the justice system.
  • Discuss why the criminal justice system should collect standardized data.
  • Find strategies and develop recommendations to improve the wellbeing of racialized individuals who are moving through the criminal justice system.

Keynote speakers:

  • Dr. Akwasi Owusu-Bempah, Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto, Mississauga
  • Anthony Morgan, Community Development Officer, Confronting Anti-Black Racism Unit, City of Toronto
  • With additional presentations from other Subject Matter Experts & Persons With Lived Experience

Who should attend?

Service providers, case managers, mental health court support workers, persons with lived experience and family members, Legal Aid Ontario staff, Crown agency staff, and police services staff. *Racialized persons with lived experience/family members who attend the think tank event are eligible to receive honoraria and travel support. To receive an honoraria and TTC tokens or inquire about travel reimbursement, please contact Candace Vena at cvena [at] ontario [dot] cmha [dot] ca
